5 Tips to Find the best Boudoir Photographer near you

Updated: Jan 4, 2023

Boudoir can be a big commitment of your time, money and emotions, so it’s important to get it right. It’s why I spend time getting to know all my divas before their photo shoot so that I can personally recommend the perfect boudoir package for them.

If you’ve come to this blog/page, you might be looking around at different studios and wondering which one is right for you. Here are my tips on what to look out for so that you can be confident that you’ve made the right choice for you.

1. SKILL

You will be photographed in your lingerie and possibly nude, depending on which packages you go for. Study different photographers portfolios to assess their talent in making women of all shapes and sizes look their best. If the photographer only shows images of model-like women and you’re a curvy girl, this is a red flag that indicates that this photographer doesn’t have a lot of experience photographing women of your body type.

Also, look for variety within the photographer’s style – you want to avoid cookie cutter images and go for a photographer that can guide you in a wide range of poses.

2. TESTIMONIALS

Ask your friends if they’ve done a boudoir session and ask to see their images. Find out about their experience and what they thought of their images – when they first saw them and now, after some time has passed.

Look for testimonials on the photographer’s website, Yelp, Facebook and Google. Watch out for bad reviews, but remember that they’re always objective and can be the result of a client’s unrealistic expectations or personal emotional issues.

3. SERVICES AND PRODUCTS OFFERED

You will need your hair and your makeup professionally done. Make sure the studio provides this service and if it’s included in your initial cost. It’s best to work with a professional rather than do it yourself because they will be able to style you correctly for camera.

Ask about the deliverability of your images. Are they prints, digital files or albums? Is digital enhancement included? Ask for examples of digital enhancement and be wary of studios who just use Photoshop to make an image look decent. You want to see examples of images that look great straight out of the camera and be able to compare them after digital enhancement. This will help you decide if you are comfortable with the quality and degree of digital enhancement the studio uses.

4. EXPERIENCE

Think about the real reason you want to do a boudoir session. This is more than pretty pictures, this is you and your body captured in a very vulnerable way. You will see yourself in a way you’ve never experienced before and your main worry will be not to like what you see (See Tip 1).

Make sure you talk in person with your photographer – you want to feel comfortable working with them and have the reassurance that she/he will create a safe atmosphere where you can feel at ease. Most women do a boudoir session to gain self-confidence, or feel that after babies or at 40 or 50 they are still beautiful. They might choose boudoir as a surprise for their loved one. These are all really important! Don’t treat a boudoir session like going to “Picture People” to get pictures taken. It’s an experience to fulfil an emotional need and you need to treat it almost like therapy – choose your photographer with the same care.

5. PRICES

Doing a Boudoir session is an investment in you. Do not shop for the cheapest photographer. Like in everything, you get what you pay for. Understand that quality work and a talented photographer comes with a price tag.

Shop around but don’t base your decision on what a package includes for the price. Ask yourself what is important, quality or quantity. Do you prefer to have one stunning portrait of you hanging on your wall that will make you feel beautiful and proud of you every time you look at it, or do you rather have a CD full of poor quality images that you won’t feel proud to show to anyone, not even yourself?

Most highly talented photographers offer payment plans because they understand the importance of making high quality photography available to women who really care about getting the best. A payment plan will allow you to select a talented photographer at a higher investment that you originally thought. Spending a lot of money on photos might feel unjustifiable if you see it just as spending money – instead, see it as an investment in you!

Get rid of any guilt you feel in investing in yourself. You deserve to do things for you and a boudoir session is an investment in you! You’re worth the best – so do your homework and then enjoy the experience.

6. BONUS TIP

If you’re starting to research boudoir photographers, here are some recommendations and an insight into the cost of boudoir photography.

Stay away from on-line boudoir deals, they might be cheap but remember, you get what you pay for. There are many ranges of investment among boudoir studios. Expect to invest at least $1000 in a middle of the line studio. But if you are looking to get a talented photographer that provides you with excellent service and quality/variety of photography, expect your investment to be at least between $2000 and $5000. Don’t forget to ask for financing!
